HONOURING THE GOODNESS AND THE BAWDNESS OF JAMAICAN MUSIC CULTURE

IN-PERSON

OPENING GET-TOGETHER
Saturday, September 10, 2022 | 2-5 PM

Meet Rewind/Forward’s curator and artists for pop-up talks and guided tours during its opening day.

LOCATION

Rewind/Forward’s free on-site exhibition opens Saturday, September 10, 2022. It runs until November 15, 2022.

The physical installation is located outside at 854 Bathurst Street, formerly the home of One Love Vegetarian.

  • The building, close to the Bathurst and Bloor intersection, has been recognized as part of a stretch of businesses catering to the city’s Black communities since the 1860s. When the first wave of Jamaican and Caribbean immigration happened in Canada during the 1960s, Toronto’s Annex Area became a hub for the homesick seeking out patties and rotis. At that time, 854 Bathurst Street was the home of Joyce’s West Indies, a long-standing Jamaican grocer owned and operated by Carmel Elias Shoucair and his wife, Joyce. The business carried hard-to-find island staples like ackee, Blue Mountain coffee, and Tiger Balm; it closed in 2007 when Carmel died. The building, however, continues to be owned by Carmel and Joyce’s daughter, Kaylah.
